What Type of Spouses are Predictive of Career Success?


There’s been a lot written about how people's careers affect their personal lives at home, but less about the huge impact that home life has on performance at the office.   It seems obvious that breakdowns on the domestic front will tend to undermine performance at the office, but less clear what attributes in a spouse are correlated with success at work. 

This Harvard Business Review article describes research asserting that of all five major personality dimensions often used by personality researchers (extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and openness), only conscientiousness (the tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement) by one spouse tended to predict higher on-the-job accomplishments by the other spouse.
